Deep Are the Roots Not Reached by the Frost
The first frost always takes me by surprise and this year was no different…
The rising sun had turned the frosted grass outside my window into a breathtaking field of diamonds. As I stood there mesmerized, I remembered a line from J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings:
The old that is not strong does not wither,
Deep are the roots not reached by the frost.
I have always loved that line, there's so much wisdom in there. As I feel into my ever-deepening roots, I'm reminded we are not tender plants succumbing to the external 'frost' of worldly difficulties, fear or things that might appear to threaten our peace. There's an eternal, old, strong nature to our true Self, that's untouched by time or outer conditions. Our spiritual core is unshakable and deeply rooted in a place beyond worldly concerns (even if we aren't always aware of it).
